Michelle's Journey
Michelle’s healing journey started at The Open Center in NYC—whose mission is to “address the real-life challenges of existence through spiritual, holistic, and integrative practices to create a harmonious relationship between ourselves, each other, and the planet”—offered her a first glimpse into the world of healing modalities. Michelle experienced her first reflexology session as a client in a Puerto Rican rainforest and felt strongly this practice was something she was called to learn fastidiously and provide to others.
She graduated from The Open Center’s reflexology certification program in 1999 and has been practicing since that time. Michelle’s practice demonstrates profound respect for the ancient history and roots of the modality and experiences fulfillment in the relationships she creates with her clients through this reinvigorating yet calming practice.
Reflexology is an age-old therapy that dates to Ancient Egypt. Pressure is applied to the feet to activate reflex points that correspond to the entire body system—something like a map. This technique aims to release blocked energy pathways to restore balance in the body. Blocked energy pathways can often prevent the emotional and physical body from developing along its natural course and can be caused by unhealed traumas, unprocessed emotions, physical injuries, etc.
After practicing traditional foot reflexology, Michelle turned next to the study of Craniosacral Therapy (CST) at the Upledger Institute(UI). UI was established by Dr. John E Upledger, an osteopathic physician who pioneered and developed CST at Michigan State University. In this type of bodywork, tension deep in the head, sacrum, and spinal column is relieved through light touch. Freeing the flow of cerebrospinal fluid calms the nervous system, thereby allowing it to self-correct. Michelle maintains an active relationship with UI through ongoing continued education.
In 2021, she connected to sound therapy through a friend who had crystal bowls, Himalayan bowls and gong in her shared space. She fell in love with this modality as it helped with her healing journey as well as giving her clients a sample. During the summer of 2023 she became certified as a vibrational and sound practitioner. She finds that this ancient tool is assisting her clients through releasing old patterns and trauma.
One of the fathers of holistic medicine in the 20th century once said: “know that all healing forces are within, not without! The applications from without are merely to create within a coordinating mental and spiritual force.” He invites us to take responsibility for our own emotional, physical, and spiritual development to live a more satisfying, fulfilling life even in the face of challenges and frustration. Exploring the benefits of reflexology can be a life-changing opportunity.
